Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a chronic medical condition often referred to as the "silent killer" because it frequently presents without symptoms yet carries a high risk of leading to serious complications such as stroke, coronary heart disease, and kidney failure. In Indonesia, hypertension remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The prevalence of hypertension in Central Java Province, particularly in Kebumen Regency, is notably high. Compliance in the management of hypertension is strongly influenced by patients’ level of knowledge, especially among the elderly population.
Objective: This study aimed to describe the level of knowledge among hypertensive patients participating in the Chronic Disease Management Program (Prolanis) at Karanganyar Public Health Center, Kebumen.
Method: A descriptive quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach was employed, involving 57 respondents selected through total sampling. Data collection was conducted between September and December 2024 using an adapted hypertension knowledge questionnaire.
Results: The study found that the majority of respondents were aged 56–65 years (n = 31, 54.4%), followed by those aged 45–55 years (n = 14, 24.6%), and 66–75 years (n = 12, 21.1%). Most of the respondents were female (n = 40, 70.2%), while male respondents accounted for 29.8% (n = 17). Furthermore, a large proportion of respondents demonstrated a good level of knowledge regarding hypertension (n = 51, 89.5%), whereas 10.5% (n = 6) had a poor level of knowledge.
Conclusion: The majority of hypertensive patients were aged 56–65 years (54.4%) and predominantly female (70.2%). Most respondents exhibited a good level of knowledge about hypertension (89.5%).
Recommendation: Since the level of knowledge among hypertensive patients at Karanganyar Public Health Center remains suboptimal, it is recommended to provide more intensive educational interventions to improve patient awareness and promote better compliance in hypertension management.
